Transform yourself, your baby and your whole family into Leia lookalikes with a nifty Leia Bun Hat.
The hat is a basic beanie (try this free pattern for sizes newborn to adult) with braided / plaited buns attached afterwards. Instructions for the making the buns are provided in this pattern link from All Things Belle. You can use any yarn, but make sure you have enough as the buns are real yarn eaters (the newborn size asks for at least 36m for the buns alone, so plan accordingly).
If you would like to make the front 'notch' or hair parting, as in the picture here, please make modifications to the basic beanie pattern as follows:
HAIR PARTING MODS
- On row 9, start with a single ch instead of 2 ch.
- Then when reaching the end of row, instead of joining to the first ch and continuing with round 10, in the last 2 stitches do a cluster of one double and one half double stitch.
- Then TURN the work and work the first sc of round 10 back into the same stitch.
- Then continue with round 10 back the way you came i.e. in the reverse direction to how you have worked the rest of the 9 previous rounds.
These instructions are to add the parting to the newborn size. If making a larger size, simply make the changes to the last 2 rows, instead of rows 9 and 10.
